25 metre Pool with Movable Floor Provides Variable Benefits
Wrightfield Pools has completed a 25-metre pool for Christchurch City Council in New Zealand. The QE II Park’s sport and recreation centre has a movable floor so the depth of the water can be varied at the push of a button. Work on the movable floor was completed ahead of schedule.
“The 25-metre pool is the QEII facility’s main pool, and what this floor gives us is versatility with how we use it,” commented Operations Manager Nigel Cox of Christchurch City Council’s Recreation and Sports Unit.
Tailor the depth
Mr Cox commented, “We can tailor the depth of the water in a matter of minutes at any time of day to suit whatever’s going on in the pool at the time.
So we can go for a full two-metre depth while people swim laps in the morning, then raise it to a one-metre depth for kids taking our Swimsmart classes in the afternoon.”
Easily maintained
The floor is raised, lowered and tilted by cables and pulleys under the floor, powered by hydraulic rams in a nearby plant room. This means the rams can be easily maintained. The floor is made from stainless steel beams and surrounded by foam-filled packs to make the floor naturally buoyant, so it can move up and down through the two metres of water.
Offer a bigger range of activities
Having a movable pool feature is a very cool feature that allows a bigger range of activities to be offered to the community, and it makes QEII’s pool an ideal choice for people of all ages and abilities.
